Infertility benefit
Eligible health services include comprehensive infertility care. The first step to using your comprehensive infertility health care services is enrolling with Aetna's National Infertility Unit (NIU). To enroll, call the dedicated Aetna NIU at 1-800-575-5999 (TTY: 711).
Need help?
Prior to using your infertility benefits, please call your Aetna Service Advocate at 1-866-267-1091 (TTY: 711) for your general benefits questions.
For specific infertility benefits questions, you may be transferred to NIU by your Aetna Service Advocate, or contact them directly at 1-800-575-5999 (TTY: 711).
Please note: Your Aetna Service Advocate can provide information and answer questions only for the plan in which you are currently enrolled. If you have questions about a plan that you are not currently enrolled in because you are newly eligible or considering a plan change during Benefits Annual Enrollment (in the fall), contact NYPAskAetna.com and include your Aetna member ID (if available) for a callback from an Aetna representative who can counsel you.
You can view a summary of infertility benefits based on each Aetna health plan.

Please refer to your plan documents for a full list of services and coverage levels.
The Aetna NIU is there to help you. It is staffed by a dedicated team of registered nurses and infertility coordinators with expertise in all areas of infertility who can help you:
- Enroll in the infertility program
- Determine whether assisted reproductive technology (ART) services and fertility preservation services are eligible health services under your plan
For further assistance and specific details on coverage, please call Aetna Member Services at 1-866-267-1091 (TTY: 711), Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 6 PM.
Interested in fertility preservation?
Please note that under the POS plan, egg extraction is an eligible expense when performed at a qualified location (Weill Cornell Center for Reproductive Medicine or Columbia University Fertility Center, or an Aetna Institute of Excellence if outside the five boroughs, Nassau and Westchester counties). Egg extraction is a voluntary, elective procedure and does not require an infertility diagnosis or referral by your physician to be eligible for coverage. The cryopreservation (freezing), monthly storage charge, and thawing for the frozen eggs, sperm, and embryos is effective, January 1, 2023, eligible for coverage under the plan, and applies to the $30,000 Lifetime Maximum. The EPO plan still requires an iatrogenic diagnosis for this benefit. As with prescriptions for IVF, drugs are covered separately by CVS Caremark and do not apply to the Aetna lifetime maximum.
Prescriptions associated with Infertility Treatment: CVS Caremark®
For assistance with prescriptions associated with IVF, call 1-877-408-9742 (TTY: 711) or visit CVS Specialty Infertility Treatment Options.
NOTE: This coverage is administered separately by CVS Caremark and does not apply to the Aetna lifetime maximum.
